If
you’ve seen Mickey Jones once, you’ve seen him a thousand times, only
you might not realize it. Mickey is a character-actor that has appeared
in so many films and TV shows (and even some commercials) that it’s
impossible to name everything he’s done, at least not in two or three
paragraphs...

If you’ve seen a tough biker in a film or show – or a random
badass with a thick beard who can kick the piss out of anyone at any
given moment – that might just be Mickey Jones.

But his acting talents aren’t limited to
tough-guy/biker-villains. He has played sensitive, intelligent
characters as well. The bottom line: Mickey Jones is the epitome of a
character actor… He’s done pretty much everything.

His
career began as a drummer. He was behind the skins during the
groundbreaking 1966 Bob Dylan concert where crowds booed Bob for going
electric. He also played for a band called “First Edition” with Kenny
Rogers on vocals. But it was in the late seventies when Mickey, tired of
the road, branched into acting.

INTERVIEW

What was your favorite TV movie that you appeared in and why?
My
favorite TV movie was actually the min-series "V: The Final
Battle". Working with my best friend, Michael Ironside, was the
best. We became life-long friends and it was also the highest rated
mini-series in the history of television.

One of my favorite character-actors is Paul Koslo whom you appeared in several shows with… When did you first work with him?
Paul
Koslo is one of our very best actors. We first worked together and
became friends on a pilot called, "Down Home". I was very new to the
business and Paul sorta held my hand. He is the best.

What was your favorite theatrical movie that you appeared in and why?
My favorite theatrical movie was "The Fighting
Temptations". It was exciting to get up early and go to work on this
film. Everyday was great fun. I will never forget that job.

Along with Dennis Burkley you have been a biker in many films – have you two ever been in the same project?
The
only time Dennis and I worked together was in the Kevin Costner film,
"Tin Cup". We used to go up against each other all the time but this
was the only time we actually worked together.

What are some of the other actors who you’ve played in Biker movies with (fellow “Biker role actors”)?
Big Bill Smith [William Smith], Charlie Dierkop, John Quade. It's hard to remember all of them.

When did you realize you wanted to switch from musician to actor?
I dreamed of being an actor when I was 8 years old but I
did not believe that this kid in Texas would ever have the
opportunity. I was at the movie with my dad when I was 8 and remember
asking myself, "I wonder how you get to do that?”

It seemed so far
away. After I moved to Los Angeles and got to know a number of actors
and people in the business, I then believed I could do it. I say,
"Never give up". I was tired of going to the airport everyday on
concert tours. I just had to get off the road so I gave up a great
career to try and get in a business that I loved but starting at the
bottom.

Was acting always something that came natural to you?
I think so. I never studied. I went to one acting class
with Jeff Corey, one of the best acting coaches in the business who
told me: "You don't need the class, you are a natural actor". I think
he was right.

Who are some of your favorite musician-turned-actors?
I can't think of anyone except Rueben Blades.

Who are some of your favorite actor-turned-musicians?
NONE! I think actors are all wannabe musicians.

You worked on a memorable scene with (Governor) Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Total Recall” – how was it working with Arnold?
Arnold
is the classiest guy I have ever met, let alone, worked with. I love
Arnold. A few weeks after I got home from Mexico City, where we shot
"Total Recall", I got a large envelope in the mail with the return
address reading, SCHWARZENEGGER. I guess the post office knows where he
lives. Inside were several photos of Arnold and me doing scenes
together. He signed them and sent them to me. He did this jest
completely unsolicited… A CLASS ACT!

In
the movie “V: The Final Battle”, when one of the good guys (Michael
Wright as “Elias Taylor”) finally casts the deciding-vote to nuke the
aliens, your character “Chris” holds up his hands and does a silent
round of applause – it’s hilarious and a scene I love to re-watch. Was
that improvised or scripted?
That silent applause was just my way of saying THANK
YOU for doing the right thing. It was not scripted but it was the right
thing to do as “Chris Farber”.

You appeared on the TV series “V” (which
came out after both miniseries) for two or three episodes, and then
Michael Ironside (“Ham Tyler”) leaves the show… Question: Was your part on that show as a special guest because of Ironside’s departure?
I was supposed to be a regular just as Ironside
was. After he knew that I was not going to be a regular, he decided to
leave the show as well. The miniseries was great but the weekly series'
budget was cut to nothing and there was no production value there. The
series was an embarrassment. It was time to go.

What was your first acting gig? Were you nervous filming it?
My
very first acting gig was in the Steve McQueen film, "Tom Horn". I was
a little nervous but the role I got was great. It was the guy that
Steve shoots down in the street later in the movie after he shoots the
guys foot at Brown' Hole. The assistant director switched my role with
one of the drivers that was his buddy. I was relegated to playing the
guitar at Brown's Hole. I was pretty heartbroken. I got screwed on my
first film.

You have a classic cameo with character-actor John Diehl in National Lampoon’s "Vacation" opposite Chevy Chase – any special or funny memories of that shoot?
National
Lampoon's "Vacation" was early in my career. When I read that script, I
actually laughed out loud alone in my room. I had no clue it would
have the impact it has. I cannot go through an airport without someone
coming up to me and asking to say my lines from "Vacation", you know,
"ALL OF IT BOY". We shot that in Cayenta, AZ. A few years ago, I was
on the Kyle Petty Motorcycle Ride Across America. We stopped in Cayenta
for gas and I pointed out our shoot location to Richard and Kyle
Petty. It was right across the street. Pretty cool to go there again.

sitting with him and getting him talking about the early days of the

with Kim Basinger and Jeff Bridges. He won Academy Awards for "Places

You usually have a beard but in some shows you don’t… Do certain gigs require you to have a beard or to be clean shaven?
I will always have my beard. The only shows I can think
of without my beard is the first "Incredible Hulk" and "M*A*S*H". I
wanted to do "M*A*S*H" so I shaved for the two-parter that I did. My

director told me that he had read roughly 70 people for this

During
that famous Dylan show where they yelled “Judas”, who was it who said
“Play it f---ing loud!” Many think it was Dylan… Was it?
I
know the answer to that. For over 30 years everyone thought it was
me. It was not me. In the documentary, "No Direction Home", Martin
Scorsese tried to manipulate the film and sound to make it look like it
was Bob. IT WAS NOT BOB!

If you check it out, the picture and sound do
not sync up. The answer is the true answer. In the film, Bob is
whispering into Robbie Robertson's ear. The voice shouting, "Play
F------ Loud was yelling LOUD. Bob was whispering...

As I said, the film
and the sound do not sync up and here's the kicker. The person
shouting, "Play F------ Loud" has a British accent. My belief is that
it was one of our stage crew sticking up for us in the moment. We had 6
road and stage crew members on the film and I truly believe that is
the person responsible. I hate to open whole cans of worms but Scorsese
got it wrong. I will stick to that until the day I die.

It wasn’t long ago when Jason Statham, Randy Couture and Terry Crews were the young EXPENDABLES… But now it seems, they’re all old timers…

Thanks to Mel Gibson’s dirty rotten Stonebanks, a founding member of the titular mercenary team who went rogue in a bad way. Following a gallant introduction of a jailbreaking Wesley Snipes, the group, blundering a mission intruded upon by our new lead villain, is considered sloppy and over the hill. So Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross seeks out a whole new group of gung-ho dynamos, all kids in comparison to the old (but some still kinda young) familiar faces.

It’s always fun seeing characters being introduced in this sort of drawn-out montage fashion: With the help of Kelsey Grammer’s soldier-salesman, Barney hires the young warriors, all taking part in various fights and exercises, visually pronouncing each member’s skill...

rating: ***1/2

This leads to the first of two missions to kill and/or capture a lecture-spouting Mel Gibson, thriving with energetic dialogue to make up for his initial lack of hands-on action… Most of that goes to Barney and the kiddos, wherein Statham, Dolph Lungren and the newly resurrected Snipes take a reluctant, shortlived sabbatical.

Filling out the elder positions are Harrison Ford as a benign CIA head
who winds up getting dirty along with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s passive
coordinator, and yet another pointless Jet Li walk-on. Meanwhile, a
motormouth Antonio Banderas, trying way too hard for comic relief
status, winds up even more annoying than he’s supposed to be. And yet, despite the surrounding ensemble, Ross, given his personal vengeance for Gibson's heavy, seems more in it for himself... Rambo would be proud!

The action sequences are involving enough, and between gunplay there’s the usual pulpy banter rooted in 80’s action nostalgia when sarcastic one-liners, limitless ammo and tons of testosterone meant pretty much everything. So if mindless doesn't matter, you won't be disappointed. But anyone expecting a fleshed-out espionage thriller, which this attempts to be, should have known better.

Back when Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in TRUE LIES, there’s an appearance by Charlton Heston, a brief nod to the top action star of years gone past… And it’s ironic that Heston, in a passive, throwaway role, wasn’t much older than Arnold, playing an active leader of an elite DEA squad, is now… So much for a cozy-cameo retirement...

And just to mention one more nostalgic Arnold flick: In COMMANDO his former military squad is killed off within the first five minutes, and this is the entire plot of SABOTAGE, in which Arnold’s John “Breacher” Wharton loses his unit, one by one, to an unknown cartel after they rob a safe house.

Breacher’s group consists of a small handful of rowdy men, chock full of stripper-loving testosterone and spouting the dumbest dialogue heard from an ensemble cast... And it's not entirely a boy's club...

As Lizzy, an over the top, drug-spun wild card you wouldn’t bring home to mother, father, or even a drunk uncle, actress Mireille Enos stands out while most of the dudes, including Josh Holloway and Sam Worthington, all seem very similar: one can only hoot, holler and curse so much and remain a distinguished, memorable character. Even when several turn up dead, it's hard to feel much of anything.

In the lead, Arnold gives a subdued performance, sharing the stage with deadpan Federal Agent Caroline (Olivia Williams), having to deal with the roughneck unit and witnessing grotesque crime scenes that she, like the audience and unlike Breacher, aren’t familiar with: Through her eyes we experience most of the shock and intrigue.

There's an abundance of standard handheld camera shots that are never too shaky nor distracting from the suspense, while the pivotal deaths are creative flashbacks occurring simultaneously within the investigation during each aftermath. And finally, after a mysterious 11th hour whodunit "twist" plays out, a showdown separates Arnold from the rest of the cast: violently quenching a vendetta subplot like the good old days.

Sylvester Stallone is Ray Breslin… When Ray goes to prison, which happens quite a lot, he doesn’t sit around playing solitaire. Upon perpetual scrutiny, everything about the interior turns mathematical… His job is to find the weak points and escape…
There’s an old Tim Conway flick where he and his buddy are imprisoned, part of a secret mission for the governor... When the governor dies, the boys become actual inmates: Same thing happens here, kind of. Breslin is given a classified, high-paying gig from the CIA to test a prison that doesn’t register on the map... Where the inmates aren’t even listed… They’ve been “disappeared” from the earth…

He winds up in a mysterious location called The Tomb (the film’s original title) where an abundance of cubicle, glass-structured cells are leveled throughout a cold, mazy warehouse (imagine Hannibal Lecter in a giant version of a Star Trek multi-layered chess set)… There’s simply no way of escape and, worse yet, the warden knows nothing of Ray's agenda.
The main device of ESCAPE PLAN is the pairing of Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead of an EXPENDABLES style cameo, Arnold plays second-fiddle, a graying-gruff inmate named Rottmayer, who, like James Garner in THE GREAT ESCAPE and Morgan Freeman in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, is the go-to guy providing “favors.” He also spouts a limited amount of exposition about this strange, impenetrable purgatory. Leading to several twists along the way… the biggest one revealed much too soon.

In the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE fashion there’s an abundance of intricate dialogue – mostly Ray’s narration, centering on the prison routine and vulnerability. This also becomes a hindrance to the story. With so much explanation it never feels like the characters are actually stuck in a dire circumstance. Meanwhile, Arnold’s lackluster performance and an embarrassingly overboard Jim Caviezel, who makes Donald Sutherland’s hissing LOCK-UP warden seem tame, doesn’t help matters.

Take away the science-fiction aspect of a modernized, futuristic detention center and you’re left with a below-average prison flick that a few gut-wrenching mess hall brawls can’t save… The overblown, over-explained PLAN exceeds the rushed, anticlimactic ESCAPE...

year: 2013 cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Peter Stormare rating: ***1/2

Resembling a leathery komodo dragon weathered by a dry desert wind, the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in action...

Having departed show business during a slight downturn in his cinematic popularity – END OF DAYS was forsaken, BATMAN AND ROBIN a travesty, and TERMINATOR 3 let down die hard franchise fans – the body builder turned movie star turned California Governor plays if safe as the aged Sheriff of a small town bordering Mexico who, on his day off, and along with likable yet clumsy deputies, takes on an infamous drug cartel leader driving a souped-up corvette at demonic speed.

Half of the film sets up the antagonistic Cortez, a young cocky killer who escapes from Federal Agent Forrest Whitaker and heads to the open highway – but it’s sleepy-eyed Peter Stormare who provides a more accessible villain/henchman. This before the important stuff gets started…

With an exception of meeting each member of the good guy/bad guy teams, it’s all about exposition and commentary before the “big game,” providing Arnold’s Sheriff Ray Owens little to do in the meantime. We get to know his underlings and their shortcomings more than realizing his own skills and capabilities. But soon enough we learn the underrated Owens has a violent past, and settled into this current cushy job as a form of semi-retirement (could this be a nod to his political excursion?).

There’s one decent action scene bridging the inevitable showdown, pitting the underdog lawman against the first wave of dirt-stomping villains. Here’s where the movie plays its hand in a steady pace, juggling a high octane action with parody of ultra violent fare.

The direction is steely and calculating, and though there’s an overabundance of gunshots and explosions some good suspense comes out of it. That is, even when the pace slows down, the clock is still ticking.

A lot has changed in a decade thanks to (or no thanks to) computer enhancement. When someone gets shot you can see the blood and guts like cans of soup exploding. The car crashes are right in your face, often resembling a gritty video game in the process. While the humor is hit and miss, a lot of the one-liners attempting to levitate the unrelenting bloodshed are contrived and miss whatever target they're aimed at.

Arnold, as part of an ensemble cast, isn’t the entire canvas – many of the players, including Luis Guzman as a witty deputy and Johnny Knoxville as a loopy gun-ho hick – provide paint along the way: each practically equal in the HIGH NOON-like proceedings. But Arnold's Ray Owens is the man in charge simply because he’s built to last, and this is his town.

So if THE LAST STAND doesn’t succeed in giving Schwarzenegger a worthy comeback, it’s definitely proof he still fits cozily into his old pair of shoes, which, for an already limited niche actor, is about all he can ask for.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is one bad dude. He’s a barbarian, a commando. Gunning down villains, chopping off heads or hunting down frightened damsels: it doesn’t matter because he’s cool, he’s mean, he’s tough… And he’s the director of Christmas in Connecticut. Okay, what’s wrong – very, very wrong – with this picture? Just about everything. Dyan Cannon's the star of a popular cooking show who, pushed by a finicky, uptight and horrendously over-the-top movie producer Tony Curtis, feigns knowledge in the ways of the kitchen – when she’s really a shallow actress living in New York City. Then there’s Kris Kristofferson as a backwoods county Sheriff, famous for saving a boy’s life. Thus Curtis gets an idea to put Cannon and Kristofferson in a holiday special taking place in her fictional country home replete with a bogus family, each member unfunnier than the next. All this is to trick Kristofferson but there’s absolutely no reason he needs to be fooled, nor does it matter when he – or the viewing public when the show goes live – finds out the truth, making the entire TV movie a dull, predictable mess… Posing the question: What on earth was Arnold thinking? And as for his career as a director: after this, he wouldn’t be back.

At one point, about thirty minutes in, as human survivors are being chased by a giant Terminator resembling something out of THE TRANSFORMERS franchise… thus giving birth to a lot of smaller machines, some riding motorcycles… it seems this movie isn’t so terrible. A lot of banal action within a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape which, in most movies look cheap but the computer effects give it a punch, or two. Then something happens. Actually, a lot of things: those being completely convoluted plot-points… But let’s start from the beginning: diving right in with John Conner, played by Christian Bale, who’s basically Rambo of The Resistance, fighting Skynet machines that brought the Earth to nuclear ruin. He’s out to save the world but first his father, Kyle Reese… who, played by Michael Beihn in the first film, impregnated mom while protecting her from that Arnold Schwarzenegger guy (making a computer generated cameo). If Reese dies, so does Connor. And Reese himself, a teenager played by Anton Yelchin… channeling Beihn’s over-the-top acting style perfectly… is on the run with a mute child and a muscular mystery man: Sam Worthington as Marcus, an intriguing character at first but as we learn more about him the movie hits a wall, the action taking a backseat to Marcus’s origin (is he human or robot?); and Conner, at this point residing in the peripheral, is melodramatically torn on what to do next. Meanwhile, the audience just wants some kickass rage against the machines, or a more involving, and less complicated, basis on which it occurs.

The original dubbed version, with Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice replaced by a guy who sounds like he should be doing FM radio voice-overs, is now sadly gone: we now have Arnold's voice that we all know... Arnold is Arnold no matter what film he's in... so the fact he's actually speaking kind of takes away from the cheesiness of the original. But it's still quite fun seeing him playing Hercules who, bored of Mount Olympus and his father Zeus throwing metallic lightning arrows, ventures to New York City where he takes up with nerdy Arnold Stang, his manager in the wrestling circuit, all the while befriending James Karen and his lovely daughter Deborah Loomis, punching-out burly sailors, battling a horribly-costumed bear in Central Park, and fighting not only the mob but the evil god Pluto. Like in all great/bad cult flicks, things flow wonderfully from one situation to the next. And then, before you know it, the movie's done: and you're a much better person for having survived it.
