What could have been titled, YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO TALK RIGHT NOW? or CAN'T WE DISCUSS THIS LATER ON? is an art-house jigsaw representation of the STEVE JOBS legacy, covering all the sketchy mere-moments before three various Product Launches: the first post-Apple II Macintosh Computer; the failed yet subliminally strategic NeXT system; and the iMAC that brought both Jobs and Apple back to life: Right before Steve hits each stage we get frantic discussions from various people including Seth Rogen's sarcastic yet bluntly serious and logically effective Steve 'Woz' Wozniak, who was Job's partner in the beginning garage days, and simply wants his groundbreaking technological importance revealed and complimented, aloud; Jeff Daniels, as former Pepsi turned Apple CEO John Scully, loathes his own stiff suit reputation; and most important of all, Jobs' unwanted daughter, Lisa, hanging around backstage, is what everything is really about. But not entirely...
Kate Winslet more than deserves second tier credit as marketing executive/faithful assistant Joanna Hoffman, speaking with a partial, never-distracting accent in a thankless yet equally significant role as she gathers all Steve's concerns, sets him up with each guest/visitor, stubbornly remains an ignored moral compass and makes sure he's able to rule each show without a single hitch. The biggest catch is we never see any actual speech or demonstration that's been fervently planned: Cutting to the next level before each vignette concludes, STEVE JOBS is a hybrid of RESERVOIR DOGS (hectically discussing what's never witnessed within confined, often claustrophobic boundaries) and A CHRISTMAS CAROL, the man himself a sort of mechanical Scrooge not quite owning-up to each "ghost" – haunting him like (what often seems like) guilt-driven hallucinations.
Already controversial for making Steve look like a complete scoundrel, Michael Fassbender actually plays the role with such subtle and natural finesse that might have been more dramatic, dynamic and edgy had the original choice, Christian Bale, remained on board... For in this case, the energy just sort of happens around Fassbender as we learn... also through creatively edited flashbacks... how Apple came about; then broke off into Mac; Jobs being fired and all that modern history jazz you can simply read about online or view in other projects (PIRATES OF SILICON VALLEY with Noah Wyle recommended over Ashton Kutcher as JOBS)...

It's during the literally last-minute problems that the man, the myth, the legend, and most of all, the resilient entrepreneur surprisingly never gets too frantic or frazzled while being perpetually cornered, and whose headstrong denial drives him, and the movie itself, past any flaws... And there are a few: Things get a bit stagey as we occasionally detour into Soap Opera territory. But like this old Macbook computer being used right now, it's the stuff inside the machine that causes things to flow so nicely, making one unaware what can possibly go wrong, because during each moment it all just seems... pretty alright while it's... you know... all going on.
Seth Rogen has been accused of always playing himself and now he’s doing it for real. Wouldn’t you know he’s not much different from his fictional characters, but here's a much better movie than usual... Meeting with buddy/actor Jay Baruchel, who's reluctantly flown to Los Angeles, the two hang out at Seth’s pad, smoke pot and have intentionally banal conversations. This suits Jay just fine, but there’s a big party being thrown by actor James Franco in his brand new super duper sized mansion.

The beginning of THIS IS THE END isn’t very funny. With forced jokes and real life actors partying hard, the only true investment is the moping Jay, wanting nothing to do with anything Hollywood. His wish comes true but surely not in this fashion: When Jay and Seth go for cigarettes and munchies at the local liquor store, a formidable earthquake opens up the ground: people are either sucked inside fiery sinkholes or vacuumed into the heavens by bright blue laser beams.

Movie Poster

Eventually the only worthwhile (yet literally God forsaken) humans left behind are as follows: Seth, Jay and their actor buddies Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and James Franco, whose mansion has become a survival compound from outside elements including an unseen creature dwelling amongst the ravenous netherworld. Meanwhile, behind boarded up doors, the guys are still just as shallow yet their narcissistic diatribes are a little funnier now that there's something… or everything… to lose.

Danny McBride, who happened to crash out in Franco’s bathroom the night before, turns up the next morning and becomes the party animal/loon our boys didn’t need, but the audience will appreciate. From wasting rations of food and water to pleasuring himself at will, Danny’s the kind of raunchy comic relief that this already raunchy comedy yearns for. Through his unpredictable behavior he brings the gang closer together. Even HARRY POTTER ingénue Emma Watson turns up sporadically, and she's not to be messed with.

While the abundantly overboard humor is hit and miss, soul-searching dialogue tends to drone on, and several classic homages are wasted on younger audiences (like ROSEMARY'S BABY), the best aspects are the stuff we don’t see at first… What exactly is that roaring creature outside? Is this a biblical or zombie apocalypse, or both? And which actor will buy the farm?

In a nutshell, THIS IS THE END succeeds in what’s gonna happen next… And be prepared since just about everything does... and then some.

Following the path of TRAINS, PLANES, AND AUTOMOBILES and its recent imitation DUE DATE, one would expect, with the pairing of a put-upon son and his dotting mother, that THE GUILT TRIP would attempt a joke-a-minute style adventure with tons of arguing, misunderstandings, and highway hijinx (i.e. what the trailers implied). Surprisingly enough, this is a very laidback road movie about a wannabe inventor named Andy Brewster embarking on a cross-country trip with his semi neurotic mom, Joyce – Barbra Streisand’s return to the silver screen in a starring role after many years: It takes a good twenty minutes before hitting the road, learning about our mother/son duo, both idly hanging around mom's East Coast house. Single guy Andy is trying to sell his environmentally safe cleaning fluid, while Joyce only wants him to find true love. After she shares about the original love of her life – a guy she’d met before his father (who died when he was eight), Andy surreptitiously locates the man’s location in San Francisco and plans the trip so mom can reconnect with her former flame (something she’s unaware of).

This alone keeps the viewer intrigued through a string of off-road situations: the car breaking down outside a strip bar and a Las Vegas visit sound more promising than they turn out to be. One scene in Texas has Joyce eating a four-pound steak for a prize, and there's an assortment of eclectic characters along the way. Yet the most entertaining scenes involve Andy’s failed attempts to sell his product to perplexed businessmen in various stuffy stopovers.

Both Rogen and Streisand have a breezy chemistry and really seem to know each other – maybe too well. The moments where both are stuck in the very small car, headed across America, whiz along in montage sequences, never allowing the audience to feel as claustrophobic and/or frustrated as Rogen, who’s a bit too whiny and negative while Babs isn’t annoying enough to cause any real sparks (or anti-magnetism) between them. And yet, by the end of this mellow trip you’ll feel that at least the characters benefited from the journey: they’re both genuinely likable for that alone to count for something.
The second film in which Seth Rogen plays the sidekick of a guy who gets cancer, that being the drowsy FUNNY PEOPLE a few years back, and the second time is a charm. Thanks to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who shows the right amount of shocked melancholy while he suffers through chemotherapy, the prolonged breakup of his shallow girlfriend, and an impending surgery that could take his life, this is a lightweight take on a heavy subject that’s both funny and emotionally satisfying. Rogen, as Levitt’s buddy who realizes cancer is a great way to pick up on chicks, is a bit too forced into the comic relief department – almost every word spoken is meant for a laugh, and his character rarely gets an opportunity to shine past the caustic rants. Angelica Huston plays Levitt’s neurotic mother, causing stress to her ailing son, but the real depth comes from his relationship with love interest Anna Kendrick as a hospital student shrink, first using Levitt as a case study but eventually – as the two bond outside the office – falling in love. Their relationship makes the movie work, while the buddy/buddy between Rogen and Levitt give routine breaks from the serious underbelly. And as breezy soundtrack tunes provide an out before things get morose, and drugs (both medicinal and recreational) turn gloomy roads into shiny avenues way too easily, it’s Levitt alone, whose character is brooding even before the diagnosis, that makes even the filler moments work: he really seems to be facing a grave future while trying to beat those 50/50 odds.

rating: *1/2

Actor Seth Rogen produced and co-wrote this Superhero story of THE GREEN HORNET who, along with his Asian sidekick Kato, assumes the role as a renown villain to fight crime.

Many problems here, the first being Rogen's performance, no different than his usual deep-voiced slacker sarcasm displayed in many light comedies, acquiring him the fame to leap into something "serious," which this is anything but.

The means of how Rogen's Britt Reid, playboy son of a millionaire newspaper tycoon, goes from party animal to the titular crime fighter is rushed and forced. After his father's death, Reid discovers dad's Asian mechanic (Kato) can not only make coffee better than Juan Valdez, but creates extraordinary cars and weapons (and just about everything) like Zeus wields lightning.

And with a few conversations, the template is set: the boys drive off to thwart any wrongdoings, all the while causing havoc to assume their villain roles. But the real baddie, Christoph Waltz, makes for a dull antagonist, providing no real threat to the boys, who really don't seem like legitimate criminals on their own.

The fight scenes, as Kato's brain becomes a virtual grid-computer to zero in on his targets (taking away from what the original Kato, Bruce Lee, acquired with good old fashion karate skills), turns all the action into a video game consul.

And Kato himself (played decently by Jay Chou) fills too many holes, making it possible for everything to happen, while Reid, a weak character to begin with, is rendered practically useless. Cameron Diaz, as Brit's new personal assistant, providing helpful clues that, unbeknownst to her, the duo apply in the field, is the only interesting player... with an assertive, no-nonsense personality, she's slightly more dimensional than the two leads, both seeming part of a banal buddy flick that's not sure what it is.

Being too goofy for a superhero movie, and not funny enough for a comedy, we're left with an overlong, dysfunctional mess.
