But Anderson had something on George Lucas since two decades earlier, his WWII flick THE DAMN BUSTERS gave STAR WARS its Death Star dogfight finale...

DAM begins with a determined, talky Michael Redgrave as Doctor B. N. Wallis coming up with a plan that is so dissected up front it gets a bit tedious, and perhaps intentionally irritating, as various tests keep failing and failing. Which is to have low-flying planes (the pilots equipped with a Lucasfilm-familiar moveable targeting-view-screen) drop bombs that wind up "rock-skipping" across a long stretch of water until exploding at the wall of, ultimately, a German dam — to succeed, they must hit the sweet spot...

Robert Shaw prepares The Dam Busters flight

Once the bomb is dropped, the planes, like STAR WARS' X-Wing fighters, fly up and veer off diagonally as the pilots, led by Richard Todd's Wing Commander Guy Gibson (with a non-famous Robert Shaw as one of his men), turns to look at the target (with the dam visible outside the cockpit window) in a similar fashion... relieved if hit, morose if missed... as the Rebel Rogue pilots. While historically this is far, far more important, Lucas provides an edgier, more vibrant, hearty and spontaneous pace...

Other problems concerning DAM BUSTERS (besides Gibson's black lab being named... The N-Word, which is spoken around twenty times) is the lack of suspense after each plane attempts glory. Despite several misses, the near-victory feels obvious, predictable. But what's really distracting are the flashes of cartoon-like ground-fire from Germans below that, sticking to our comparison, dart forward like lasers coming off The Death Star canons or Tie Fighters. Only here there aren't any German planes to dodge and blast. It's only those three damn dams, making it difficult for the audience to keep score, or know exactly what is going on. Only why.
And as a completely unrealistic albeit fun casting bonus, Carl Weathers adds an edgy blaxploitation element, eventually going up against his "rival" of sorts, a formidable Richard Kiel, whose voice was replaced in post production.

Signed by the late Richard Kiel

While it's much too easy for our heroes to traipse around Nazi-ridden Yugoslavia without getting killed...conversing as if taking a stroll down a public nature center.. there are enough snags in their way that you'll either forget or embrace the fact that, for better or worse, this is a fantasy war film...

A good thing when you have gun and knife fights, grand explosions and an ensemble dream cast banking in on actors from that period's smash hits: JAWS for Shaw, ROCKY for Weathers, and of course, Harrison Ford in STAR WARS and his trusted Reynolds is Angus McGuinness, who was Gold Leader in that same epic's Battle of the Death Star. The first thirty minutes have both characters with hands tied behind their backs as they trudge up and down craggy mountainsides like desperate billygoats while a helicopter (described by MacConnachie as “the black skeleton”) soars above: playing a hectic game of cat and mice.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; the edgy violin score is reminiscent of future suspense films THE FRENCH CONNECTION or THE EXORCIST; and the performances by both (now iconic) cult favorites are topnotch: Shaw with a cunning edge while McDowell slowly loses his sanity.

The actors really stand out during sporadic pockets of downtime; the veteran either goading the youngster into becoming more vicious or sharing sullen memories of his dead wife: All crafted neatly within the intense action sequences built around a taut climate of primal perseverance by two men who’ve become human animals to survive against a metallic one.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; So with the help of Newman as an alky gambler, they devise a sting involving a card game and "rigged" horse races. The direction flows, the acting is good, but what really works are the depression-era sets and the jazzy Scott Joplin score, making the somewhat implausible con, and the clever yet cop-out twist ending, not matter.

One has two miners tied down by Indians to a stage coach trying to survive as they wind along a mountainous trail; another has a soldier riding down a log-jam as he escapes from a band of Indians. In both situations, the characters wind up like our title character, and yet the suspense, thanks for director Robert Siodmak, keeps the viewer interested till the bitter end. Sporadic conversations between Custer and General Sheridan (Lawrence Tierney), showing Custer in a sympathetic light, are highlights in a somewhat muddled bio that goes on too long but has some great moments: Robert Shaw's mesmerizing style of delivering monologues enhance a mediocre script. The last twenty minutes, leading up to, and then rushing the battle of, Little Big Horn, is a let-down: but it's the build-up, thanks to a capable director and cast, that works.
