For a couple of guys who seem like Black Sabbath or Blue Öyster Cult fans, the bad country music never stops playing, but that's THE VAN by Crown International Pictures, a wall-to-wall goofy soundtrack of one young geek's journey into loose sex and vehicular savvy, as the main song croons of a Chevy Van, which his isn't: but the yellow color stands out, and the water bed breaks after one lucky screw that may not have even happened...

As much of the film has creatively shot daydream sequences of our underdog hero Stuart Goetz, the same kid that Marcia Brady didn't date when jock Nicholas Hammond told her "Something suddenly came up" on THE BRADY BUNCH. Here he's a car washer (another CAR WASH influence) under a sporadically cast Danny DeVito, one year before playing grouchy dispatcher Louie DePalma on TAXI. Funny thing, DeVito's character sits in just as tight a space, giving orders, although he's an affable (if crooked) fellow here.

Most of the picture takes place around the suburbs and outskirts of the L.A. Valley that includes the beach where a gathering of vans are shown for the mere exploitation of those vehicles, which this drive-in flick's not only named after but is exploiting from its popularity in an era of hot rods and scantily clad summer girls, including hot blonde Connie Hoffman hooked with a token muscular bully (who drives a fitfully dark van).

But the ingenue here's an uptight girl-next-door played by Deborah White, and yet her quirky friend, FADE TO BLACK quirky friend Marcie Barkin, is even more cute and effective: the girl of our guy's best friend Harry Moses, who doesn't do much but hear about his buddy's misadventurous conquests that, unfortunately, are spoken of more than actually experienced. For what THE VAN is in droves, it also misses out on: A circular road movie where the sky could have been the limit but is, for the most part, just a another backdrop. Still though, Quentin Tarantino is a VAN addict, and it is an addictive little ride.
At one time, sex comedies had a group of lusty yet inexperienced teens on a quest to lose their virginity… But those teens are now middle aged, and perhaps too experienced…

Centering on a married couple played by a proving-she's-still-hot Cameron Diaz as Annie, and a frighteningly skinny Jason Segel as Jay, both with the kind of dream jobs allowing their characters enough free time and money to get in and outta trouble: Jay manages a radio station, while Annie writes a blog about to be purchased by a conservative outlet. And perhaps their total lack of chemistry is intentional, igniting the plan to film themselves screwing in just about every position possible, and then some.

Far before the HANGOVER style ending, when we get a montage of what really happened in the bedroom, the pornographic contents are mysterious to almost everyone – instead of erasing the file, Jay sent it to a select group of people who may or may not have viewed it… This includes her parents, the mailman, a suburban couple, and last but not least, Mr. Real Life Sex Tape himself, Rob Lowe as Hank, on the verge of buying her blog and providing Annie with the most to lose. Although in an awkward, overlong, unfunny scene, it turns out Hank is so shockingly wild and open-minded, that when Jay stealthily dashes around his house seeking the ipad… stalked by a ferocious German Shepard with more lives than an alley cat… the entire point of the story (not much to begin with) is lost, and the urgency becomes nonexistent far too soon.

Once the initial scavenger hunt is complete, we’re left the couple dealing with a preposterous blackmailing scheme where the movie, attempting HANGOVER style outdoor shenanigans, becomes so futile and contrived it’s nearly impossible to describe, much less review.

title: PROJECT X
year: 2012
cast: Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper
rating: ***

In this movie… Or, at this party… Character names really don’t matter. There’s the kid whose parents left him their house for the weekend. And he has three faithful buddies: The confident instigator; the dorky fatso; and a faceless camera operator who captures everything. The “all you see is being filmed” device ala CHRONICLE works nicely here, making the inevitable suburban bash feels like it’s right in your face – and you don’t even need 3D glasses. But while the party is key, some of the best scenes occur beforehand. As the popularity-seeking geeks set things in motion, from getting the word out to ripping off a "loaded" garden gnome from an urban drug dealer, we get to know these underdog losers enough to where, once the raging party occurs, their winning matters. While the cocky Oliver Cooper delivers the scene stealing role – think of a younger Vince Vaughan in SWINGERS – the heart and soul belongs to Thomas Mann, providing the essential drool-to-cool story arc. It’s his birthday party after all, which occurs in montage tidbits ranging from naked girls to a midget locked inside a stove, and fireworks and even a flamethrower. And while the intensity increases a bit too quickly… the party morphing into an act of terrorism within a ten-minute time frame… it’s never a drag. Yet what remains consistent throughout all the noise are the characters we’ve grown comfortable with. All leading to a weak and implausible resolution. Although the aftermath really doesn’t matter. Leave all that consequence stuff for THE HANGOVER.
