Michael Parks, the character actor "recently" cast perfectly in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and KILL BILL thanks to mega-fan Quentin Tarantino, starred in this 1978 made for television movie created by JAWS author PETER BENCHLEY, what was supposed to be a pilot for a series centering on various sea adventures. And while that show never got off the ground, this is a nice little film on its own.
Parks, with his usual laidback yet intense James Dean style, plays Jim Spanner, a maverick fisherman who, along with ex-rummy counterpart Panama (William Windom, straight from a Hemingway novel), has found a sunken boat with an abundance of treasure. All is well until a gorgeous shark researcher arrives – Mary Louise Weller as Tracey Russell. The only way for anything to happen is if she puts her engine in his old boat, which means her own particular research comes first. Through Russell we see some terrific underwater shots of the sharks roaming their habitat, although unlike Benchley’s JAWS and this film's rather misleading title, the killer fish don’t provide much of a suspenseful element.
A smug pirate in preppie clothes, Le Salle, who wants to find that treasure before Spanner, is the antagonist here. And his eleven-year-old daughter Kris, played by child actress Katy Kurtzman, takes an interest to Spanner’s long lost little brother Mike (Moosie Drier), an adventurous kid who also loves the sea.

Although not loaded with thrills, it’s a neat little adventure with amazing shots and nice chemistry between the actors: especially Mary Louise Weller, best known as Mandy Pepperidge from ANIMAL HOUSE, who has three important scenes with each male character. So if you can find it, this never released on video treasure is worth watching.
In one of the most wonderfully bizarre made for television musicals ever filmed, Katy Kurtzman, an underrated and incredibly talented child actress from the 1970's, plays a modern day Heidi. With the signature blond pigtails, she frolics throughout the mountainside with her grandfather, played by Burl Ives, who is slowly losing his sight.

What they really want is to live together without a care in the world... Other than a bearded psychopath lurking in the shadows, hilltop life is downright peachy.

But when Grandpa gets lost in a thunderstorm, Heidi travels with a poor little rich girl to a mansion in the big city – and here’s where the movie takes a pretty bad turn: Don’t blame our lovely blue-eyed heroine for the snag in the breezy storyline. PYSCHO actor John Gavin’s role as the rich girl’s neglectful father ruins not only the whimsical pace, but takes Heidi out of the story for tedious pockets of downtime. This movie is about HEIDI... who cares about a stuffy businessman?!?

Overall, despite the camp value which has value nonetheless, young Katy Kurtzman turns in an amazing performance, especially when she's crying or wishing for the life she may never regain. Her eclectic bouquet of expressions, ranging from contented to ecstatic to woebegone to hysterical, makes some of the other stuff – reminiscent of an eerie dream – not matter. It’s the title character that counts... It's her adventure!
While
it's perplexed adults for centuries, the children in Disney films seem
to have grasped the Meaning of Life… at least in their eyes: When
something needs discovering, discover it!

In this made for TV movie, a
family moves into an antebellum mansion once owned by a river pirate.
The mother and father are about as important as those mushmouthed
teachers in Peanuts cartoons – this is all about the curious son
Alexander, played by the late Steve Shaw, who meets the niece of a local
palm reader.

And as the young adventurous "Blossom Culp," Katy Kurtzman
creates a memorably quirky tomboy: Donning glasses and dressed like a
traveling orphan, she determinedly riles Alexander into seeking the
truth behind the mansion's history. But he gets the prime directive on
his own with the help of a blue-hued ghost.

The daughter of the
mansion’s former owner, “Ida Dumaine” died mysteriously and, to acquire
eternal rest, provides a riddle that desperately needs solving. Cult
actress Olivia Barash, as the lovely little wraith holding a fluffy dog,
makes sporadic yet important appearances, and at one point turns human
for a heartfelt slow dance during a party, later providing a dog/cat
chase to add some lightweight hijinx to the underlying spooky vibe…
especially with the dependably villanious Anthony Zerbe on board...

But
even with the suspenseful chills, it's a great movie for kids,
especially creative ones.

title: LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE: THE MUSIC BOX
year: 1977
cast: Melissa Gilbert, Alison Arngrim, Katy Kurtzman
rating: ***1/2

That infamous rich bitch Nellie Oleson has a music box and poor little Laura Ingalls really, really wants it. It’s that simple? You wish! Laura, after swiping the box from Nellie’s bedroom during a private club meeting, hides it in her barn. And whenever needing a “fix,” she goes inside and listens to the chiming, metronomic tune that, after hearing it a dozen times, might drive you crazy. It sure does Laura… as the tune permeates into surreal, creepy, guilt-driven nightmares. The standout guest star is Katy Kurtzman, who in the next season would play a young Caroline Ingalls… Here she’s a sweet stuttering prairie girl named Annie who Nellie keeps from joining her club because… she’s just not normal enough, in Nellie's estimation, to belong. During one scene Nellie recites an impromptu poem that seems written by Mohammed Ali: “A chicken can squawk and a butterfly can flutter… But Anna can’t talk… All she can do is stutter!” This (and other classic Bad Nellie moments) makes for a classic episode: Especially after she catches Laura with the Music box and blackmails her into a form of mental slavery. And as Laura conceals the truth, she breaks poor Anna’s heart... All leading to a climactic emotional scene that proves Katy Kurtzman, who stutters and cries at the same time, was one talented child actress.
