His maverick, footloose, hunted character is used by a supposed father/daughter team to dive for gold in shark-infested waters. This was based on the book HIS BONES ARE CORAL by British author Victor Canning, and with a pulpy title like that, it was well worth finding after searching a few used bookstores...
With a terrific Hemingway TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT-style fishing boat rocking through stormy waters: Wherein the film begins with a choppily-edited shark attack, the book opens with a plane crash, and he soon meets a pretty girl who introduces him to her father, and, like the movie, is hired to captain a charter where dad can dive for gold in a location guarded by sharks. The only downside is the second half doesn't live up to the first, being that, like many dime novels of the crime nature, the born loser main character gets too weepy and whipped by the backstabbing dame... but no matter... CORAL was a fantastic read that wouldn't have been discovered by Cult Film Freak without that maligned Sam Fuller flick, ruined by studio henchman, which is not only difficult to understand in the dialogue department, taking place in Cairo where the actors seem like the real thing and thus, dubbed horribly. Even Americans like Arthur Kennedy (playing a Walter Brennan style rummy sidekick from the theatrical TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT directed by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart) and Barry Sullivan rush through their lines: providing what feels like a film noir collage of sneaky conversations with brief bouts of jumbled action. Although, technically, if you center on individual shots, creative camera angles, and a few neatly-flowing non-cut performances by a genuinely cool Bogart-style Burt Reynolds, Mr. Fuller's poetic signature is visible, somewhat, within those murky, muddied waters.

There's a dog that, wherever he goes, gives bad luck to whomever takes him in: this happens to be Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino, who both meet each other, then the pooch, in a rural small town hideaway whilst Bogart and three other men plan a caper to rob a plush mountainous hotel. But bad luck usually dogs these kind of characters, doomed from the start while plotting their big easy score which, in this case, got Humhrey's Roy Earle cut from prison early: Although Bogart isn't altogether villainous as he, after meeting a down-home family which includes a beautiful young girl with a club foot, invests in real people, hoping for the girl's hand in marriage: but he's more suited for Lupino, a gun moll whose bittersweet performance adds to Bogart's seasoned usual, and from one scene to the next this is a thoroughly enjoyable melodrama centering on tough human beings, not your typically cliched gangsters. Unfortunately some really bad performances, like the dog's last owner, and the insertion of melodrama into what should have been a leaner, tighter, more edgy crime flick, especially if our man's flawed cohorts Arthur Kennedy and Alan Curtis along with nervous middleman Cornel Wilde had more than peripheral importance: But, either way, HIGH SIERRA, with Bogart's name after Lupino in the credits, is the last movie where that would ever happen again.
At first Stewart, helping a group of mobile settlers, has a distracting voice. Not the usual alum-jawed, slow-paced drawl, it's more like he's imitating Edward G. Robinson. Which kinda fits. Stewart's Glyn McLyntock is a former outlaw, something we learn later after an outlaw friend, saved from a kangaroo court's noose and played by Arthur Kennedy who turns... well... that's a spoiler: What's important is that with Kennedy's initially friendly charm turned cocky bravado, BEND wouldn't be much at all. Rock Hudson as a handsome gambler adds very little...

It's about Kennedy and Stewart — the latter turning into what we'd later refer to as the "Rambo" character or, before that, MR. MAJESTYK: an underrated guy who shows his resilient worth against a ton of odds and proves he's more cunning and badass than any other badass within an untamed terrain that he's become used to. A shame that it took so long for this too happen, before which we got otherwise good actress Julia Adams reacting hilariously slow to an arrow through her chest, and too many familiar character actors talking about what's about to happen. When it finally does — blink once and it's gone.
Once again, like BEND IN THE RIVER, our leading man is a drifting, hired loner in James Stewart, taking a dramatic backseat to Arthur Kennedy's far more interesting and fleshed-out character, Vic... But that's only because his story is more desperate, urgent, while with Stewart, the more times you view the movie, the deeper his character becomes: And the scene-stealing Kennedy's not much without this film's rich rancher, who's not the typical cattle baron but actually has a little soul in him, and creepily foreboding dreams. Enter Donald Crisp's Alec, with three problems, two he's aware of: The first being Stewart's title hero, Will Lockhart, a stranger from Laramie, dead-set on sticking around, eventually hired by Alec's rival... a tough old gal played by Aline MacMahon. Will's out to thwart a gun deal to the Apache's that could make them ten times as dangerous...
