JOHN THAW WITH JACK WATSON & INGRID HAFNER 'FIVE TO ONE'

John Thaw in FIVE TO ONE Year: 1963 Rating: ***

British icon John Thaw is best known as the hard-edged, grouchy yet equally charming chief detective on England's THE SWEENEY television series in the 1970's... but he had appeared on big and small screen pictures of the previous decade, and in the case of FIVE TO ONE it's both at the same time...

Featuring Thaw as one of three con-artists nabbing money from a crooked bookie, this was a cinematic b-crimer that wound up on the EDGAR WALLACE MYSTERIES anthology show... and seems more of a pilot episode of what would have been a pretty nifty series...

Although Thaw is somewhat out-shined by resilient girlfriend Ingrid Hafner and talkative partner Brian McDermott just for the fact that, as the gang's leader, he's not given enough of the character-actor qualities that would make him more sneaky and nefarious, which were traits even as the hero on THE SWEENEY...

Featuring Lee Montague as his primary target and ever-durable Jack Watson as the token investigator, FIVE TO ONE is a nifty fifty-four minute programmer that's both grungy and sophisticated: which describes both the characters and the story, although there needed more of the first dealing with such unapologetic lowlifes.
