MARY-LOUISE WELLER IN 'BLOODTIDE' W/ LYDIA CORNELL

1982 Mary Louise Weller, Lydia Cornell rating: ***
An American couple, played by Martin Kove and Mary-Louise Weller, visit a Greek isle to find the husband’s missing sister (Deborah Shelton), who turns out alive but "isn't quite there."

Having survived a virgin sacrifice in the pre opening credit sequence, she was floated into a reef-cavern and experienced something the audience doesn’t witness.

James Earl Jones, as a maverick archeologist named Frye, is on the case, discovering within the cave something far deeper  than jewels. Meanwhile the town locals, led by a grimacing Jose Ferrer, have something to hide as young women begin to vanish.

It’s when Frye’s girlfriend Barbara, played by the beautiful Lydia Cornell, becomes victim of a JAWS-like attack from a mysterious underwater predator, that serious questions need answering.

And if this review seems more like a patchwork of ideas, that’s what BLOODTIDE offers in lue of plot or structure, yet it’s not completely awful for the casual viewer. Horror fans will be disappointed as the creature is only seen in a flash...

But according to Mary-Louise Weller:

“It wasn't scripted to be about any monsters, but since it was actually blocked currency from numerous countries... Mexico, UK, Greece, USA... they used the movie as a way to move cash around. It was just amazing that it even cut together at all.” And sure, it's far from amazing, yet this midnight snack offers something for either sex: Kove has his shirt open macho-corny style while Cornell and Weller dress-down nicely for the heat.
